Our cheaper-than-chips tortilla dippers are best eaten hot off the pan. Make these quickly and simply for a tasty snack food dipper for your company or when watching the game. We made them in plain vegetable oil, oil/butter, and brown butter. The brown butter was delicious but not very economical. Since these are cheaper than chips tortilla dippers, we recommend either without oil or the oil/butter for fuller flavor.
It is hard to remember what I have at home in the cupboard while shopping at the grocery store. So when I found myself with three bags of unopened tortilla wraps, I was faced with what to do. After asking my son, he recalled a time when I had used the frying pan to crisp them up years ago. We tested each cooking method to see what resulted in better flavor. Of course, the browned butter was delicious. However, we are aiming for a cheaper chip option. And the oil/butter mix was great for flavor and crispness.
These pan-fried tortilla chips made great dippers for our salsa and nacho cheese.
Why are these tortilla chips so damn addictive?
These are super easy to make in the frying pan. They are very crisp, almost like a chip, when fresh from the pan. Best of all, they are an inexpensive snack food. Unfortunately, with the chips being so expensive, at least where I live, they start at $4.99 and suffer from shrinkflation. This is a great alternative.
They are a great appetizer snack before dinner and a game-day treat.
Let’s get ready to make these dippers.
Here’s how you make these addictive snacks. Take the wraps and cut them into wedges or your favorite shape. Heat your non-stick frying pan to medium and add the oil with the butter. We used salted butter and vegetable oil. Heat the oil/butter until it’s bubbly.

Put the cut tortilla in the pan and wait until it puffs slightly before flipping it over. Be careful not to have the pan overly hot, as it will burn. Also, if you are making these without oil and just in just the pan, they will get black but not burned.
That’s essentially it! Yes, it’s that simple, and yes, it is that tasty.

How to customize your tortilla chips.
You could spice these tortilla chips with any popcorn flavoring as well.
Use whole wheat or other similar wraps instead. They would need to be thin, though, to puff and crisp.
Add a touch of sesame oil for Asian flavor and serve with kimchi for a great snack idea!
